No thanks to Tony Romo's understudies, who went 0-7 in his absence,
the Dallas Cowboys believe they are still alive in the chase for an NFC
playoff spot.
Why? Because Romo has returned from his broken collarbone, and he led them to a 24-14 victory over the Dolphins in Miami. He was still rusty, of course, but he was also typical Romo at times -- preventing a safety by completing a pass left-handed. He completed 18 of 28 passing attempts, threw for 227 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
And, hey, in the NFC East, where the Giants and Washington Redskins are lords over all and playing for first place this week at 5-5 each, the Cowboys -- if they can beat the unbeaten Carolina Panthers in Dallas -- will be back in the hunt.
According to ESPN's Power Football Index, the Cowboys have a 49.6 percent chance of running the table, second only to the Eagles at 55.5 percent. (Has the person who computes this seen the Eagles play?)
There is danger awaiting Romo: The Panthers activated defensive end Charles Johnson from short-term injured reserve on Tuesday to bolster an already ferocious pass rush. The Panthers have 22 sacks in the last six games and 31 for the season, tied for second-most in the NFL.
Local fans should watch for Panthers tight end Greg Olsen, a New Jersey native with 48 catches for 718 yards and six touchdowns.
